By Sean Sullivan,
Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens, who has been embroiled in scandals that have attracted national attention, announced Tuesday that he will resign.
“Today I am announcing that I will resign as governor of Missouri effective Friday, June 1st at 5 p.m.” said Greitens, a Republican.
He has faced allegations that he initiated unwanted sexual contact with a woman who worked as his hairdresser and improperly used a charity donor list.
Greitens struck a defiant tone in making the announcement, saying, “I am not perfect, but I have not broken any laws.” He did not take questions after delivering brief remarks.
Greitens was once seen as a rising star in the Republican Party who might one day run for national office. He was elected in 2016 as an outsider with sterling credentials: he is a former Navy SEAL who once worked with Mother Teresa.
Under state law, Lt. Gov. Mike Parson will take over as governor.
